How to Create the Best Cancer Care Package DIY

a detailed how-to list with useful tricks to soothe the many side-effects of Chemo and radiation

How to use this article:

Each section is organized by the side-effects that chemo and radiation can cause. You can either skip to the areas that are most affecting you or as prevention and to be ready for whatever will come, buy a bit of everything and have it as back-up just in case that side-effect arises. If any of these side-effects hit you or your loved-one, you will want to be better prepared ahead of time.

Use the "Table of Content Links" to jump to the areas that are most important to you.

Radiation has more of a physical drying effect (mostly at the site of the radiotherapy) and can cause tiredness and potential nausea. If it is in the head and neck region then it can also be very hard on the mouth and eating.

Chemo causes many potential side-effects. This entire guide can be used for Chemo and the difficulties it can cause.

*This was written as a guide for our care packages that we used to sell, as you will probably notice in the way it was written.

Nausea/Vomiting/Stomach Upset/Hot Flashes

Sea Bands

May help with: Nausea, Vomiting, Stomach Upset

A sea band is a cloth-elastic-bracelet with a bead-like hard object embedded in the bracelet. When placed on the wrists correctly to apply pressure to the Nei Kuan acupressure point (instructions are provided at the end of this booklet), many swear by its effectiveness.

Literature on the efficacy of acupressure tactics like pressure points on nausea is voluminous and demonstrated for pregnancy (1)  nausea and vomiting relief as well as other conditions. Oncolink.org recommend it as an easy to implement, possible countermeasure to nausea that is safe. If it works for you, that's great.

chimes ginger chews

May help with: Nausea, Vomiting, Stomach Upset

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) in different forms has been studied in treating nausea, dysentery, heartburn, flatulence, diarrhea, indigestion, vomiting, loss of appetite, motion sickness, cough, and bronchitis.

Benefits of ginger include properties such as; anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, infection fighting, blood sugar lowering, brain function improvement and helps to prevent cancer as this literature review documents (2).

It has been a go-to, first line of defense for centuries across many cultures. We chose the premium brand 'Chimes' because of its large and dedicated following and the simple and short ingredients list. The name showed up too many times in our research to ignore. GF, V. Non GMO.

organic peppermint tea

May help with: Nausea, Vomiting, Stomach Upset, Hot Flashes

Staying Hydrated helps to sooth dry skin, lips and nails with a tea simply by drinking more water. Peppermint may still taste great despite ‘metal mouth’.Peppermint is widely used for nausea management. "Some people find that peppermint helps with sickness. It is thought that it helps to slow down the gut". cancerresearchuk.org

Peppermint has long been used to calm upset stomach, vomiting, gas, bloating and indigestion. It may help relieve tension headaches and migraines. It also may improve energy, fight bacterial infections, act as a gentle muscle relaxant and may helps improve concentration (3). We linked references to a couple of big literature reviews in the footnotes.

‘Buddha Teas’ is the brand we chose because the tea is Organic with no additives and the non-bleached - chlorine free - tea bags.

organic chamomile tea

May help with: Stomach Upset

Chamomile is one of those plant-of-many-tricks that is considered safe to try by medical professionals. Specifically, chamomile is a non-caffeinated, stress and anxiety-relieving plant. It may improve digestion from mild bloating to irritable bowels. Other studies fount it may help; prevent cancer, reduces Inflammation, manage blood sugar levels, promotes heart health, boosts the immune system. Chamomile is antioxidant rich. It is often used in skin care. Can act as a gentle antihistamine.

One of the best attributes is that it may help regulate and induces sleep (4). There is a link to a good literature review on this herb in the footnotes below.

Chamomile is also recommended to be used as a mouth rinse to swish with - helping relieve mouth sores. Simply steep, wait to cool and swish it in the mouth a few times per day.

Buddha Teas wrote this on the tea bags… Makes sense."By using the highest quality herbs, there is no need to include any artificial or natural flavoring. Enjoy your tea the way nature intended".

The bags are unbleached as well which was something, we went out of the way to find because swishing/drinking chlorine sucks.

pur xylitol peppermints

May help with: Nausea, Vomiting, Stomach Upset, Hot Flashes

The Benefits of Xylitol are many. Essentially, it's a simple and clinically demonstrated effective tool for protecting the mouth.

Where to start... Xylitol is a natural sugar-alcohol (diabetics use it as a sugar substitute).

Xylitol acts like a Trojan horse for oral bacteria which confuses it for its regular food, sugar. Happily, bacteria is not able to digest this type of sugar. So when it is eaten, bacteria starves and is killed off (the simplified explanation). This brings the pH (the acidity level) of the mouth to a more neutral environment helping to prevent cavities (which are caused by acidity).

Xylitol also increases saliva flow which helps with dry-mouth. Saliva exposes teeth to healing minerals helping the mouth to naturally prevent and re-calcify current potential cavities. You will notice that your teeth feel smoother after having a mint. Xylitol is recommended by Hygienists and Dentists. (5)

The Peppermint naturally slows digestion down which can soothe the stomach when upset, can calm nausea and cool the body internally.

*Note: Xylitol is a naturally mild diarrhetic in higher doses, so experiment and start off slow. Much like chocolate, it is also poisonous to dogs.

hot oatmeal

May help with: Nausea, Vomiting, Stomach Upset

Many cancer and chemo patients can have trouble eating if nauseous. If you develop extreme sensitivities to cooking smells or have mouth sores which can make eating difficult, oatmeal can help.

Strong spices can sting the oral tissues and hard textures can damage them more easily.

This is a simple meal when regular food is too difficult to prepare, smell and digest. It is important to eat despite the body wanting non-of-it. We included these non-flavored oatmeal packets in our backup packages as a timely reprieve should cooking, eating or digestion become difficult.

Oatmeal is low scent, easy to prepare, simple to digest food and a source of great nutrition.

Oatmeal is a good source of fiber, protein, fat and is loaded with important vitamins, minerals and antioxidant plant compounds. It is among one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat. There are too many good things to list here (6). Some benefits: lower blood sugar levels, anti-inflammatory, anti-itching, reduced LDL, increased growth of good bacteria in the digestive tract and relieves constipation, just to name a few. Finely ground oats have also been used to help treat dry and itchy skin.

A tip while cooking; leave the kitchen and turn the vent on while food is cooking and let food cool down first if the scent is too much. Cooler food smells less.

(6)  https://www.webmd.com/diet/oatmeal-benefits#1

Un-scented: shampoo, soap, conditioner

May help with: Nausea

Many radiation and chemo patients develop sensitivities to scents, perfumes, cooking smells and flower/plant aromas.

Our literature reviews and patient interviews showed most patients asked for less smelly everything since their sense of smell changed.

We included these travel-sized tools in our packages as a timely reprieve should scent-sensitivity flare up. The idea was not to provide a month's worth of product but to hold you over for a few days till you find a longer-term alternative if needed.

We sourced toiletries with no artificial additives, no parabens, no artificial colors, and no fragrance.

flexible neck straws (disposable)

May help with: Nausea

Flexible straws are a convenient way to encourage sipping fluids when you have difficulty moving.

The simple act of drinking water is one of the most important recommendations to stay hydrated while going through chemo. Sipping little bits of water at a time is easier on your stomach but also helps flush the extra chemicals out of your system. Sipping water helps diminish nausea and prevents dry mouth which can cause mouth sores and cavities.

We prefer reusable versions but those require special cleaning process (which is risky when the immune system is compromised). Disposable straws are a good temporary solution when the need specifically calls for something as critical as staying hydrated when mobility and cross-contamination are an issue.

Night light

May help with: Nausea/Vomiting/Safety

Sometimes nausea hits at night and there is not much time to rush to the bathroom. Talking to and reading what patients had to say led us to include a night light in our care packages.

This is a plug and play version that turns off automatically when ambient light is strong and turns on when the room is dark. Simple but effective way of lighting a path in the dark when you are in a rush.

Also helpful on the nights when sleep is difficult, and you don't want to wake up loved ones.

Skin/Nails/Lip Hydration

Cuticle oil

May help with: Nails/Cuticle Hydration

Nails and cuticles are forms of human skin that can be severely damaged by chemo treatments. Adding necessary and frequent hand washing to prevent cross-contamination makes it worse.

There are many types out there. Try to find one that is low to un-scented and with less additives.

Oils to try: Vitamin E oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, sunflower oil, olive oil or coconut oil.

epsom bath salts

May help with: Skin/Nails

Bath salts are essentially a combination of minerals (magnesium and sulfate mostly). The skin is our largest (external) organ and is very absorbent.

Taking a bath in general is great for calming. A bath may be enhanced by using Epsom salts to help relaxation, reduce stress and reduce inflammation. It has been used for treating aches and pains for generations. Soothe your irritated skin, calm the nerves and ready yourself for a good night’s rest with these bath salts.

Only buy un-scented to prevent nausea.

Lindi soothing balm

May help with: Skin Hydration

Lindi Skin Soothing Balm is a rich, emollient lotion that hydrates the skin and can help manage the dry, flaky skin that result from radiation or other conditions. When applied after therapy and on non-treatment days, the Soothing Balm can help promote healthy, hydrated skin. Lindi Soothing Balm is highly concentrated and fast absorbing for maximum hydration. Paraben Free. CIinically tested, Dermatologist and Allergy tested (7). Also unscented to prevent nausea.

Lindi re-usable skin cooler pads

May help with: Skin Hydration

The natural properties of water and aloe vera combine to help in providing soothing relief for compromised, dry skin. These cooler pads are a unique hydro-gel dressing system designed to cool, calm, and hydrate the skin. Apply to the irradiate area after treatment.

The pad feels cool to the touch at room temperature - and delivers instant on-the-spot relief, while also providing hydration. Unlike other dressings, the Cooler Pad does not adhere to skin cells - promoting a healthy environment for your skin to heal. Some common applications are: Radiation dermatitis, sunburns, or itchy dry skin. Aids in the recovery of burns, swelling and irritation. With proper care, these hydrogel pads can be refrigerated and re-used many times. Unscented to prevent nausea.

lip balm

May help with: Lip Hydration

There are so many types of lip balms out there. Try your best to get simple ingredients, un-scented or at least low scent, but otherwise any lip balm will be appreciated. Buy 2, 1 for at home and 1 for appointments. You're always going to want this on you. Lips get hit hard!

Magic Cap - flexible head or neck covering (Buff Headwear)

May help with: Hair/Scalp, Coziness, Warmth

The head releases a lot of body heat. Covering your head helps prevent some of the heat release and keeps you feeling warmer.

Patients recommended this type of hat for its soft flexibility during hair changes and its versatility in that it can be used as a neck-warmer, a bandana, a full cap and other possibilities. Instructions on the many ways to use the scarf are included in each kit.

non-metallic cutlery

May help with: Nausea, Taste Change

Many chemo patients complain of a metallic taste that can ruin many flavors. The term is 'Metal-Mouth'. This is also a reason why chocolate doesn't taste good during chemo (sorry!).

Non-metal cutlery is an easy way to reduce metal mouth. Our Aftercare Package includes a set of re-usable cutlery that are easy to wash. It also helps reduce plastic waste from disposable cutlery. Oncolinkuk.org has a great article on reducing metallic taste in cooking.

It is recommended to not eat your favorite foods while going through chemo. The taste changes can ruin those foods and make it difficult to go back to them after treatment is completed.

floss picks

May help with: Oral Sores, Dental Cavities, Severe Oral Complications

We chose floss picks instead of floss string for hygienic reasons and for ease of use.

Taking care of your teeth and clearing out bacterial colonies from between teeth is more important during chemo than probably any other time. The oral cavity exaggerates negative health states while going through chemo treatments and radiation. Bacteria can cause more damage and do so more rapidly than usual.

It is important to be gentle with the tissues while flossing. Do not bang down into your gums.

Flossing is an easy thing to do but is easier to ignore. Ignoring this easy step can cause oral complications, inflammation and sometimes severe infection.

We grew up with 2 dentist and 3 dental hygienists in the family.

It's important to floss when healthy but now it’s critical.

Swishing with baking soda or salt can help protect and aid healing the tissues as well: 1 tsp salt or baking soda per 1 cup water. (There is no baking soda nor edible salt in this package since we assumed you have some at home).

*Ask your dental hygienist for proper flossing technique for your individual case.

Oral Toothettes

May help with: Oral Sores, Dental Cavities, Severe Oral Complications

Chemo and radiotherapy can negatively affect oral tissues and cause sensitivity and mouth sores. Some patients report strong gum/tooth sensitivity.

Your toothbrush should always be soft-bristled. Always choose the softest version. Medium or soft will not do if ultra-soft is available.

As an alternative to a toothbrush, toothettes help brush teeth if strong sensitivities arise. It is not as effective as brushing but is much better than not cleaning your mouth at all. It feels much better and prevents complications.

It seems like an odd gift but anyone that is going through chemo or head and neck radiation will be very appreciative for this tooth brush alternative.

May help with: Oral Sores, Dry Mouth Dental Cavities Prevention

Ear loop surgical face mask

May help with: Visitors, Immune Strength

There are many ways to spread germs: hands touching face, cell phones, sharing food or drink, breathing, sneezing, coughing…etc.

During Chemotherapy and Radiation, the immune system becomes compromised and cannot protect itself like it usually can.

Having your guests wear masks, since they may knowingly or unknowingly be carrying a flu or cold, is very helpful to protect you. It's a bit awkward as wearing a mask is uncustomary but it's easy to forget you are wearing one after a few minutes.

You may want to wear a mask as well when in close proximity to others.

hand sanitizer

May help with: Immune Strength

It is recommended to wash your hands by following a correct technique to protect yourself from infection. If in doubt, wash anyway. It's incredibly effective and simple.

If you cannot move much or are in a rush, hand sanitizer liquid or towelette wipes like those we have in most of the care packages are a good, while imperfect substitute.Washing is better at removing debris, but sanitizer helps if you can't wash. We decided on the wipes rather than the gel because the wipes can remove more physical debris.

Only buy un-scented to prevent nausea.

ear plugs

May help with: Sleeping Aid

We chose the 3M earplugs because of the quality of the foam and string.

These are used in industrial settings but are very comfortable.

Why the string? Because it's easy to lose earplugs if they are not attached. Also, one earplug is surprisingly ineffective. You don't want to drop these on a hospital floor, so the string helps a lot.

3M earplugs are made of a foam that is easy to wash and reuse as well, the material is very soft and non-absorbent. Sleeping in noisy environment without something like this is tough. Or catching up with sleep during the day.

eye mask

May help with: Sleeping Aid

Recovering well requires sleep and rest. At the hospital, it's bright. At home if you take a nap during the day, it's bright. When actively trying to sleep through distractions, reducing light pollution helps. We chose this eye mask because it is thin, silky and has a nose extension that prevents light from coming through. We prefer thin to fluffy and thick because sometimes the extra material just gets in the way and is heavy to wear.

Stay Organized/Memory/Distraction

Puzzle Book

May help with: Distraction

A cancer diagnosis is like being hit with a train and smothered in stress.

A simple and challenging way to keep the mind engaged. Helps to exercise the chemo brain away. Having a book in physical format is great as a reminder of something to do. For those who enjoy brain twisters, these are a great break. Over 240 puzzles per book. We provide a pen as well.

Adult coloring book

May help with: Distraction

Just another great distraction and can be very soothing to the nerves. Remember to buy un-scented felts or pencil crayons and a sharpener.

Journal & Pen

May help with: Staying Organized/Memory/Stress Relief

To write down thoughts, keep a food journal, keep track of doctor’s notes…

Extension cord

May help with: Staying Organized/Memory/Distracted/Stay Connected

When it is difficult to move around for various reasons like energy loss, nausea or pain, sometimes the electric things you want to use are just too far from the plug in the wall.

Many patients recovering from surgery, radiation or at chemo appointments, find the extension cord useful to plug in the phone, an extra lamp, battery charger, laptop or a tablet.

Another tool to help keep in touch with others and facilitate distraction or research.

Remember a charge cord for all electronic devises.

Ear Buds with microphone

May help with: Distracted/Stay Connected

You probably have a set of these but patients tell us that its best to keep one in your appointment bag, so you never forget it.

Tote

May help with: Organization

Going through chemo can be emotionally overwhelming and stressful. Having to get ready for each appointment can be difficult when ‘chemo brain’ or just regular stress sets in.Our ‘Chemo Appointment Package’ and ‘Comfort Kits’ come in a tote ready to go with you for each appointment.

We chose a simple, easy to clean tote bag that can serve the purpose of going with you to all the chemo appointments and then can easily be washed or discarded when done.

Try keeping what you use at the hospital separate from what you use at home if possible for cross contamination and infection control.

Appointment Comfort

Neck Pillow

May help with: Comfort

Neck pillows make it surprisingly easier to avoid neck strain and neck kinks while napping or dosing off. We chose an inflatable, light weight pillow that is easy to inflate and deflate and carry in a bag back and forth from appointments without occupying too much space. The inflation knob pushes in flat and gets out of the way so it does not poke you. Texture is velvety.

Nothing fancy, but it helps your get the rest you need anywhere you are.

sleeved blanket

May help with: Comfort

Much like a normal blanket, this covers you from neck to toe with some room to spare. The size is 130cm by 180 cm and is made of basic fleece.

Unlike a normal blanket --- this one has sleeves to provide free access to holding and manipulating objects without needing to uncover, keeping your arms and neck wrapped in warmth. The sleeves are long and roomy. Having two sleeves is handy for putting on and removing the blanket easily when you need to access the chemo lines. The sleeve on the side of the chemo line can be tucked around the neck for extra coziness. It is easy to remove one sleeve while the other sleeve holds the blanket up. We recommend using this blanket only at the hospital and not using it at home due to cross-contamination possibilities.

If you wish, there are many more expensive versions of this blanket available. We chose this one as an economical, temporary solution that is easy to transport back and forth for each round of chemo and then disposed of. Stay warm and cozy, yet stay active, with this adaptable sleeved blanket.

non-slip socks

May help with: Comfort/Safety

Chemo appointment rooms can be cold. Chemo treatments can cause chills. Putting shoes on and back on when resting can be difficult at chemo appointments.

Keeping your feet warm and being able to walk around safely without putting struggling with shoes is needed sometimes. The anti-skid bottoms are a nice addition to normal socks as these may prove dangerous on slippery floors.

We recommend only using these socks at the chemo clinic and not at home due to cross-contamination risks. We recommend you keep these socks in a separate bag in your appointment kit to prevent them from touching other items in the kit.

We chose these socks as a basic, washable yet disposable backup for a round of chemo for use at the hospital.

Magic Cap - flexible head or neck covering (Buff Headwear)

May help with: Comfort

The head releases a lot of body heat. Covering your head helps prevent some of the heat release and keeps you feeling warmer.

Patients recommended this type of hat for its soft flexibility during hair changes and its versatility in that it can be used as a neck-warmer, a bandana, a full cap and other possibilities. Instructions on the many ways to use the scarf are included in each kit.
